 | The Chen style is the oldest school of taijiquan. Its founder was Chen Wangting of Chenjiagou village in Henan province, who created the different sets of Chen style routines around the middle of the 17th century. The Chen families of Chenjiagou village practised this style from generation to generation. Chen Fake (1887-1957) , the 17th generation sucessor of the Chen style and renowned for his accomplishments, went to Beijing in 1928 and established his school there so that gradually the Chen style spread.
The Chen style is characterised by its fast and slow movements, circular and spiralling action which affects the flow of inner energy in the body. One of the most important basic trainings of this school is the practice of "chan ssu chin", silk reeling exercise, in order to comprehend and experience the source of inner energy. For beginners, the 24 Chen style form, created by Feng Zhiqiang, a present day renowned master and student of the famous Chen Fake, is taught, as well as the silk reeling exercises.
Chen style is therefore more suitable for people who would like to combine relaxation with a more vigorous physical training.
