 | Qigong, which is a cultural legacy of China, has a history which can be traced back more than 4000 years. In ancient times, due to torrential rains and floods, the body got stagnant and damp and so a kind of dance was invented to rid the body of diseases, which developed to what is today known as Qigong.
It is based on the theories of traditional Chinese medicine, like the five elements, Yin-Yang theory, the concept of viewing the body as a whole, and doctrines on internal organs and the meridian system in the body.
Qigong is mostly a self-training skill of cultivating the Jing (essence), Qi (vital energy), and Shen (spirit/mind).
Qigong exercises can be both static and dynamic, in different postures of standing, sitting and lying down. Currently, there are 10,000 different kinds of Qigong in China. In spite of different variations of Qigong, the basic principles are the same: the focusing of the mind or attention, correct body posture and regulating the breath, in order to promote Qi.
Therefore the practise of Qigong can prevent and treat diseases, strengthening and maintaining the health of the body and mind in order to prolong life.
